ACEP Intern Alana Vilagi was recently featured in news story by KTOO on her senior design project work which focused on creating a mobile version of the Geographic Information Network of AVÀÇÂÛ̳’s (GINA) Augmented Reality Sandbox.

The sandbox, constructed to educate children about topographic maps and watersheds, operates by using a Microsoft Kinect sensor mounted above it which detects the elevation of the sand and sends the information to a projector.  This is then overlaid as an elevation map on the sandbox.

The final product was a user-friendly, all-inclusive kit that can be easily disassembled or set at different heights for children.  In addition to Alana, the senior design project partners included Cody Klingman, George Stevens, and Austin Hunt.
