A new study published in Nature Ecology and Evolution reveals that increased moisture levels may have been a primary cause of death for giant herbivores approximately 10,000 years ago.

Pleistocene Park an experiment in adventure

More than 700 donors believe in an attempt to recreate the ice age in Siberia. The operators of Pleistocene Park have raised more than $100,000 in a crowdfunding effort to bring bison and yaks to eastern Russia. The creators think the animals will help convert tundra to ancient grasslands that will slow global warming.

May 3 ceremony marks 100 years since UAF's creation

Brief speeches, a re-enactment and a birthday cake on May 3 will mark the 100th anniversary of UAF's creation. Everyone is invited to the ceremony, which will be held from 1-2:30 p.m. in Centennial Square, between Wickersham Hall and the Gruening Building.

Nominations due for Staff Council's May 1 election

UAF Staff Council will elect its 2017-2018 president and vice president at a meeting scheduled for 8:45–11:15 a.m. Monday, May 1, in the Wood Center ballroom. Nominations may be submitted either online or in person.

Some 150 FFA members will gather in Palmer April 18-21 for the AV̳ FFA State Convention. The 41st annual event will take place at the Matanuska Experiment Farm and at Mat-Su College.

UAF student to intern in NASA's flying laboratory

NASA has selected a University of AV̳ Fairbanks undergraduate student to intern in a most unusual laboratory — one that flies 2,000 feet high in the sky. Svea Southall, a mathematics major from Unalakleet, will fly aboard a NASA research aircraft this summer to study the Earth's lands, oceans and atmosphere.

Plant pathologists to honor Jenifer McBeath

UAF Professor Jenifer McBeath of the School of Natural Resources and Extension has been selected as a Fellow of the American Phytopathological Society.

She will be honored in an awards presentation during the society’s annual meeting Aug. 5-9 in San Antonio, Texas.

Regents pass resolution supporting college scholarships and grants

On April 13, 2017, the University of AV̳ Board of Regents heard an assessment from UA President Jim Johnsen and chancellors on contingency plans should the university receive budget cuts from the AV̳ Legislature. Regents unanimously passed a resolution in support of the AV̳ Higher Education Investment Fund, the AV̳ Performance Scholarship and the AV̳ Education Grant.

A fossil discovered by a Montana hunter in the late summer of 2010 is a new species of an ancient marine reptile group known as plesiosaurs.
