UA Board of Regents to meet in Anchorage, March 2-3

Festival of Native Arts comes to UAF March 2-4

The Festival of Native Arts is slated for March 2-4 at the University of AV̳ Fairbanks Davis Concert Hall. Doors open to the public at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, March 2 and 3 and 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 4. This year’s theme is “Carry Your Drum, Carry Your Culture.”

The Resilience and Adaptation Program at UAF is accepting applications for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Peter MacKeith photography exhibit opens for First Friday

The "2017 Peter MacKeith Memorial Photography Exhibition: Ascension" will open Friday, March 3, with a reception in Wood Center's Arctic Java. The photos will be on display beginning at 5 p.m. The reception event is free and open to the public. Frozen Lenses, the UAF student photography group, is hosting the exhibit through March 19 in partnership with the Wood Center Student Activities Office.

Museum hosts Family Day to celebrate film and photography

The University of AV̳ Museum of the North will hold a Family Day exploring film and photography on Saturday, March 4, from noon to 4 p.m.

BRIGHT Girls summer academy accepts applications

Applications for the BRIGHT Girls summer academy are now open. The deadline is April 1. BRIGHT Girls offers two-week, free, day-only academies in Fairbanks and Juneau for high school girls. Participants explore the biology and habitat of salmon or harbor seals.

'Fences' to be screened at Arctic Java, March 7

The Nanook Diversity and Action Council will screen Denzel Washington's 2016 film "Fences," an adaptation of a 1983 play by the same name written by August Wilson.

Professor receives award to study global oceans

A UAF assistant professor will study tiny animals and particles across the world's oceans after receiving an award from the National Science Foundation. Andrew McDonnell, with the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, will also educate AV̳ns about ocean sciences and what it means to be an oceanographer.

Lifelong fascination with nature drew Rivera to AV̳

Growing up in Panama, at the bottom tip of Central America, Pat Rivera was regularly exposed to nature and different environments. Rivera, who has worked on and off at UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences since the late 1980s in various research and technical roles, attributes much of her adventurous and animal-loving personality to the positive experiences she had in her outdoorsy, close-knit community as a kid.

2017 Heart Walk team leaders and walkers needed

Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans and affects the lives of many of our own fellow employees. As we have each year, UAF will be participating in the American Heart Association's Fairbanks Heart Walk on Saturday, May 13.

UAF TRIO Day offered awards and insights

Lacey Brewster, a 2013 graduate, received the TRIO Achiever Award during the Feb. 16 TRiO Day event on the Fairbanks campus.
