Watt-Cloutier to deliver keynote at AV狼论坛 Native Studies Conference

The fifth annual AV狼论坛 Native Studies Conference is slated for April 7-9, 2017, at the University of AV狼论坛 Fairbanks. The conference features two keynote presentations by Sheila Watt-Cloultier, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, and a panel of three young AV狼论坛 Native leaders, including Marjorie Kunaq Tahbone, Samuel Johns and Olivia Piiyuuk Shields.

Lectures explore the role of the press in society

Fairbanks academics and professional journalists will explore the role of the press in society during a two-part lecture series at the Raven Landing Community Center on March 29 and April 5. Both events start at 7 p.m.

National Day of Action focuses on sexual assault

The Nanook Diversity and Action Center invites you to celebrate the National Day of Action on Tuesday, April 4. The action day is observed annually as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month to focus awareness on sexual violent prevention. Visit the NDAC booths at the Wood Center (11 a.m.-2 p.m.) and the Moore-Bartlett-Skarland Complex (4-6 p.m.) to participate.

Fascination with light keeps Karlsson focused on northern horticulture

While earning her doctorate, Meriam Karlsson became interested in the effects of temperature and light on plants, particularly flowering plants produced in greenhouses. The horticulture professor has continued work in this area for nearly 30 years at UAF.

Commencement 2017 takes place Saturday, May 6, 2017. Participating faculty should act now to inform coordinators they plan to attend and to ensure their rented regalia is here in time for the ceremony.

No rehearsal for Commencement 2017

The Fairbanks campus' 95th graduation ceremony will be held at the Carlson Center on Saturday, May 6, 2017, at 1:20 p.m. There will be no rehearsal for the ceremony, so participants are encouraged to ask their questions early.

'Mending Masculinity' performance coming to UAF

Perry 鈥淰ision鈥 DiVirgilio and Kavindu 鈥淜avi鈥 Ade will bring their poetry performance, "Mending Masculinity," to the Wood Center ballroom at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 30.

Squirrels somehow predict seed bonanza

Stan Boutin has climbed more than 5,000 spruce trees in the last 30 years. He's fallen only once, and he has often returned to the forest floor knowing if a ball of twigs and moss contained newborn red squirrel pups. Over the years, those squirrels have taught Boutin and his colleagues many things, including their apparent ability to predict the future.

Chancellor's search update

The chancellor search committee is reviewing applications for the chancellor position and expects to announce finalists in mid-April. Finalists will likely visit campus in late April to meet with UAF leadership and hold forums for the community, faculty, staff and students.

Planning and Budget Committee to meet in April

The UAF Planning and Budget Committee will hold its initial meeting on April 7 and will meet every two weeks thereafter. The committee plans to wrap up its work by the end of the academic year.

Chinese opera film to be screened

A Chinese opera film, "The Legend of the White Snake," will be shown at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 9, at the Pioneer Park theater.

Community classes hosted during Extension Week

From cheesemaking to raising chickens, 15 free community classes will be offered in Fairbanks April 10-14 during the annual Spring Extension Week.

Cooperative Extension Service agents, staff and a community expert will teach the classes. Topics will include growing cilantro and other herbs, preventing diabetes, using a GPS, retirement planning, fermenting foods, heating with wood, raising peonies for fun and profit, using iPhones, doing Zumba, producing 鈥減owerhouse veggies鈥 and more. The Powerhouse Veggies class will cover how to grow certain nutrition-packed vegetables and why.

Symposium will present AV狼论坛's space-related research

Apply for UA's teaching scholarships by April 15

Applications for the Teach for AV狼论坛 Presidential Scholarship will be accepted until April 15, 2017. The $12,000 scholarships aim to boost the number of AV狼论坛ns who become teachers. The money will cover tuition at any University of AV狼论坛 campus.

Register for Beat Beethoven 5K race

The Beat Beethoven 5K race, the Fairbanks Symphony's 23rd annual springtime fundraiser, will start at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 15. Early bird race registrations for $25 will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. Monday, April 10. Registration prices go up after that.
