Focus on physics defines Zhang's career journey

Deep inside the GI is Hui Zhang’s office. Three desks line the mostly bare, white walls. Behind the door is a large bookshelf filled with scientific papers, textbooks and journal publications. The barren appearance of her office would not lead someone to conclude that the professor of physics had been there for five years. “I just don’t have time to decorate,” Zhang said.

In 1963, 23-year-old geologist David Whistler sat down for lunch on a rocky hilltop one mile above Kennicott Glacier. With one hand on his sandwich and the other on his miner’s pick, he flipped over rocks. One of them made him pause. Embedded in the stone was a row of sharp teeth.

Festival of Native Arts fall fundraiser Oct. 13

AV̳’ Festival of Native Arts will host a fundraiser from 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in the Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center at 101 Dunkel St., Suite 210.

Registration open for invasive species workshop

Registration is open for the AV̳ Invasive Species Workshop Oct. 24-26 in Anchorage. The annual workshop will highlight invasive species policy, research and management, including a focus on eradicating elodea, the aquatic invasive plant.

Career-exploration volunteers needed

UAF volunteers from a variety of fields are needed to help second-graders explore careers in November.
