Regents to hold special meeting to discuss potential budget cuts

The University of AV狼论坛 Board of Regents will hold a special meeting on April 13 to discuss potential budget cuts by the AV狼论坛 Legislature. The board meeting will be held in Room 204 of the Butrovich Building on the University of AV狼论坛 Fairbanks campus from 1-3 p.m. and will also be available via live stream

Are ravens responsible for wolf packs?

People who study animal behavior think they may have found out why wolves hunt in packs 鈥 because ravens are such good scavengers. Scientists who watched wolves on Isle Royale in Lake Superior came up with the raven-wolf pack theory after puzzling over a question: Why do wolves hunt in large groups when a single wolf can take down a moose?

UAF to honor Steve Lundgren as business leader of the year

The School of Management will honor Steve Lundgren as its 41st business leader of the year during a sold-out dinner and award ceremony April 15 at the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel Gold Room.

Lundgren is president and CEO of Denali State Bank.

Food safety course offered for AV狼论坛 producers

AV狼论坛 Sea Grant is offering a new class aimed at helping AV狼论坛ns understand and comply with new federal regulations on food safety. Taught by AV狼论坛 Sea Grant seafood specialists Chris Sannito and Brian Himelbloom, the Preventive Controls for Human Food class will be held in Kodiak on April 12-14. Commercial food producers are the main audience for the course, including small, medium and large processors.

Summer Sessions offers golf lessons for adults, camps for kids

Is golf your game? Would you like to learn or perfect your game? UAF Summer Sessions and Lifelong Learning has teamed up with the Fairbanks Golf Club to offer lessons for adults and three one-week camps for kids.

Facilities Services reorganized

UAF Facilities Services has redistributed the work handled by its Division of Auxiliary and Contract Services in advance of the retirement of Martin Klein, the division's longtime business manager. Klein will retire April 26. His position will not be filled.

Register for 2017 Research and Creative Activity Day

The Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Activity will host UAF Research and Creative Activity Day on Tuesday, April 25.

Undergraduate students in all disciplines are invited to participate with posters, displays or performances. The works will be exhibited in the Wood Center multilevel lounge from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. An awards ceremony will follow.

Prahlad, Sanders featured at Permafrost Book Prize Reading

The annual Permafrost Book Prize Reading will feature authors Anand Prahlad and Scott Russell Sanders at 7 p.m. Friday, April 14, in the University of AV狼论坛 Museum of the North auditorium. Prahlad won the 2016 Permafrost Book Prize offered by Permafrost, the University of AV狼论坛 Fairbanks' literary journal. Sanders judged the entries.

A University of AV狼论坛 Fairbanks study has determined that warmer water migrating from the Atlantic Ocean is a surprisingly powerful contributor to Arctic sea ice decline.

Life returning to island destroyed by eruption

Nine years after it erupted, Kasatochi Island is just beginning to resemble its neighbors. Kasatochi is a speck in the middle of the Aleutian chain between Dutch Harbor and Adak, about 75 miles east of the latter. The volcanic island had no modern history of erupting until August 2008. In a few days that summer, the island changed from the lush green home of a quarter million seabirds to a gray pile of ash.
