Last week, the Chancellor’s Cabinet and I received a great training from UAF Fire Chief, Doug Schrage, and the UAF Fire Department on how to use automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) in the case of a health emergency. The chief and his team have kindly extended the training offer to groups across campus, and I encourage you to reach out to him and set one up for your team. The training takes 30 minutes to an hour and gives each member of your team the power to save the lives of your fellow Nanooks or members of our broader community. Whether you are trained in the use of AEDs or not, I would encourage you to take a moment to look at the UAF map of AEDs. (Click the “AED locations” button in the upper right-hand corner.) Take a walk from your normal place of work to the AED and back. Even if you won’t use it yourself, knowing where it is and the path to get there could save a life.

As we move into a new semester and have hit our annual Title IX training deadline (today!), I’ve gotten several questions about required trainings. Please note that Statewide Human Resources provides a shorter list of required trainings; those are the basic ones required across all of UA, than does UAF. Because of the nature of our programs and facilities, UAF has a few additional requirements.

Required trainings for UAF employees:
  1. Behavior Based Safety* (one time, within 30 days of hire or before undertaking specific activities identified as safety concerns). []
  2. Workplace Harassment Prevention** (one time, within 30 days of hire) []
  3. Title IX (annually by Oct. 1) []
  4. Employee Safety Orientation (one time, within 30 days of or before undertaking specific activities identified as safety concerns) [EHSRM site]
  5. Slips, Trips and Falls (one time, within 30 days of hire or before undertaking specific activities identified as safety concerns) [EHSRM site]
  6. Protection of Minors (Part I: Awareness; Part II: Policy and Report. One time for all employees within 30 days of hire or prior to working with minors, and annually if you are an “authorized adult,” as described in the Protection of Minors policy.) [EHSRM site]
* This replaces Injury and Illness Prevention and Hazard Communication. If you have already taken these trainings, you do not need to take Behavior Based Safety.
** This replaces Anti-Bullying in the Workplace. If you have already taken that training, you do not need to take Workplace Harassment Prevention.

We’ll be updating the Chancellor’s policy on required trainings shortly to ensure that the training titles and descriptions are up to date. Please check that you’re current on your trainings, and be sure to take Title IX! Thank you for keeping yourself and all of us at UAF safe!
