The AVÀÇÂÛ̳ Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit will hold its annual research review on Wednesday, April 5 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the Elvey Auditorium. A draft agenda can be found at . Presentations on unit-sponsored research projects will be given by graduate students and post-doctoral researchers in the morning starting at 9 a.m. followed by a lunch in the Globe Room at noon (please RSVP withÌýMonica Armbruster). Starting at 1 p.m., short updates on unit-sponsored projects will be presented, and time will be set aside to discuss individual projects with the investigators. A formal, open business meeting will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Globe Room.


Join NDAC and Milena Droumeva, professor at Simon Fraser University, B.C., for a FemCon presentation about the objectification of women in the gaming world today from 2-3 p.m. . We often focus on the way female characters are visually objectified in games, but Droumeva sounds out the impact of audio in video games, and how portrayals of female characters in games have significantly impacted gaming experiences. “If we can’t represent women as fully human, how can we think as women as fully human?" That includes how women sound in games… from Mortal Kombat to the Last of Us Part 2… the quiet evolution of female voice in games.


Geosciences Seminar: Mapping volcanic SO2 plumes from polar orbit satellites

Vincent Realmuto, principal scientist in the Earth Surface and Interior Group at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory pioneered the use of multispectral TIR image data to map volcanic SO2 plume. His Geoscience Seminar presentation on Friday, March 31 at 11:45 a.m. via Zoom will review the fundamentals of TIR remote sensing and outline procedures to accommodate the sensitivity to environmental factors. Assistant Professor of Health Policy Katie CuevaLife Science Seminar: COVID-19 in AVÀÇÂÛ̳

Assistant Professor of Health Policy Katie Cueva, Ph.D., will lead the Institute of Arctic Biology's Life Science Seminar on Friday, March 31 from 3-4 p.m. in the Murie Auditorium. Cueva became involved in informing AVÀÇÂÛ̳'s response to COVID-19 early in the pandemic with various projects and taking part in a multi-site case study on community strengths and responses to COVID-19 in rural communities throughout the circumpolar north. She will give an overview of her involvement in these projects, share findings from the AVÀÇÂÛ̳ portion of the multi-site case study, and describe emerging themes from across the circumpolar project.
