Friday Focus: Nanook Nation shows up for our students

Over the years, I have held a variety of jobs at UAF. All of them have been rooted in telling stories that inform, educate and connect our audience with the transformative work here. Now, as the interim executive director of university advancement, I lead a team that inspires people in support of a common cause. On Nov. 28, UAF celebrated AVÀÇÂÛ̳ Tuesday with a one-day campaign inviting contributions to the Student Support Fund. We set a goal of 23 gifts in honor of the year. By the end of the day, 35 donors helped unlock a generous challenge to raise $14,255 to support students in their most critical time of need.ÌýContinue reading this week's Friday Focus.

Be aware of a moose's body posture. If a moose lays its ears back or raises its hackles (the hairs on its hump), it’s a sign that it is angry or afraid and may charge.

Be moose aware on campus

Moose are a routine part of life for many AVÀÇÂÛ̳ns and are frequent visitors on UAF campuses, especially in winter. Be sure to look around you when you leave a building or walk along roads and paths, even ones that are frequently traveled by other people. Read more about how to be safe around moose.

Three birch trees lit by lights on the ground stand in a snow-covered forest.

Memories of souls in a winter birch forest

On a recent afternoon, middle AVÀÇÂÛ̳ slipped into darkness. But a few hours after the 3:17 p.m. sunset, a golden light appeared in a field cleared of trees by a farmer more than a century ago. Inside a plot of poplar and birch trees on the old farm field was a young woman. Ronnie Daanen was her father.

Increase access to education with no- or low-cost materials

In a recent survey, nearly 75% of UAF student respondents reported that the costs associated with textbooks represent a significant financial burden. No-cost and low-cost textbook options not only save money, but they also help ensure greater access to education. Read more about these course materials.
