Battalion chief Pat Mead is retiring after 40 years of service as a firefighter, including more than 30 years at UAF. Everyone is invited to the Whitaker Fire Station (on the Fairbanks campus) on Friday, Jan. 24, from 3-5 p.m. to wish him a happy retirement. Light refreshments will be served.

Mead has been a part of the fire service for the last 40 years. He served with the Port Jarvis Fire Department, New York, from 1980-1982, was a student firefighter at the UAF Fire Department from 1982-1985, and worked for Conoco Phillips on the North Slope for six months in 1985 before moving on to the Kodiak Fire Department from 1985-1989.

He left the Kodiak Fire Department and returned to the University Fire Department, where he served as captain from 1993-2004 and later was promoted to battalion chief, from which he is now retiring. During his time with the university he has provided knowledge and support on various projects, including serving as the department health and safety officer and the apparatus fleet manager.
