Conversations in graduate student mentoring

The Graduate School and the Faculty Development, Assessment and Improvement Committee of the Faculty Senate are hosting a graduate student mentoring workshop for faculty from 1-2:30 p.m. on April 5, via Zoom.

Tiera Coston will lead the discussion, “Conversations in Mentorship.” The workshop will address barriers to effective mentorship and will introduce practical tools and resources that participants can use to enhance their mentorship skills and mentoring relationships. Drawing on professional literature, Coston will lead participants through the rationale for strong mentoring, developing a mentoring philosophy, and designing a mentoring compact.

Coston has a Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology and serves as the assistant dean for academic outreach and engagement in the college of arts and sciences at Xavier University of Louisiana. She directs the CARE program, which supports the success of first-time, first-generation students. Coston collaborates with faculty to develop their teaching and mentorship in a variety of projects that have been sponsored by Innovation through Institutional Integration, Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement, and Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity.
