Nominations are open for the Brina Kessel Medal for Excellence in Science. Kessel
was a professor for more than 40 years and devoted a lifetime to the study of ornithology,
emphasizing the birds of Arctic and subarctic AVÀÇÂÛ̳.
Lt. Henry Allen and a few tattered comrades traveled from near present-day Cordova
up to what is now Bettles. They then turned around and beat winter to St. Michael,
where they jumped the last boat for San Francisco.
Yelena Mazour-Matusevich will lead a teaching presentation and Q&A at noon Friday,
March 25, via Zoom. The presentation, which was initially planned for March 18, was
rescheduled.

Deadlines and reminders
Scott Walter will present "Student Engagement Through Research and Field-Based Learning"
at the IAB Life Sciences Seminar on Friday, March 25 at 3 p.m. via Zoom.
The AVÀÇÂÛ̳ NSF EPSCoR program will host an online presentation by Lt. Dustin Picard,
a recruiting officer for the NOAA Corps. Picard will talk about careers with the Corps,
which is the uniformed component of NOAA.
The registration deadline for the upcoming symposium on the AVÀÇÂÛ̳ Native Claims Settlement
Act on April 12-13, 2022, has been extended. People are encouraged to register online
until Friday, April 8, 2022.
The Learning Inside Out Network is hosting an event on Saturday, March 26 from 9 a.m.-2
p.m., "Writing Resilience: Making Meaning of the Bounce Back from Trauma." The free
event will be led by local creative writer and teacher Tiumaluali'i Jody Hassel, a
licensed trainer and supervisor of the Trauma Center Trauma-Senstive Yoga at the Center
for Trauma and Embodiment, Justice Resource Institute.
